Did you know...

Five out of the ten Gawad Galing Pook 2007 Awardees are cities: Cebu, Marikina, Naga, Las Pinas, San Carlos (Neg. Occ).

Tagum City in Davao del Norte established a "Palengskwelahan" to provide education to out-of-school children proliferating in the public market and terminals.

Marikina City's "Two Jobs per Family Program" aims to find employment for at least two members of each family to provide them with enough financial resources.

Vigan City is the best preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial city in Asia. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

LCP President Abalos elected ULAP President
LCP President and Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos was recently elected president of the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP). He vows to strengthen the policy development and advocacy efforts of ULAP in coordinating local government efforts with national issues and concerns.

Bicol cities host 2nd LCP Caravan
The LCP conducted a successful 2nd Island Caravan in Bicol last April 2008. Outreach programs were held in the cities of Naga, Iriga, Ligao, Legazpi, Tabaco and Sorsogon where LCP members distributed support foods and medicines, eyeglasses, wheelchairs, scholarships and livelihood packages to poor families.
 

LCP and AMA to give full grant to poor but deserving medicine students
The LCP recently inked partnership with the AMA School of Medicine in Makati City in providing full scholarship grants to 25 deserving students from the 4th and 5th class cities. Cities undergo training on managing air quality
Eighteen cities crafted their strategies and action plans in a bid to address effectively the air pollution in their respective areas. This was the highlight of the first leg of the Air Quality Management Traning sponsored by the LCP, the Partnership for Clean Air, and the Local Government Finance and Development Project of the Department of Finance last March 2008 in Manila.

Philippine Cities Show the Way to Dynamic Development
Since the World Bank introduced its Cities Development Project in the country in 1999, Philippine cities have become a hub of creative development activities, demonstrating the willingness and ability of local governments to take the development agenda into their own hands.


City-finalists deserve accolades too
Four cities - Butuan, Tarlac , Tangub and San Fernando - share the limelight for their innovations in local governance as finalists in the 2007 Galing Pook Awards.

A Call for Sobriety and Adherence to the Rule of Law
The League of Cities of the Philippines manifested its united and solid support to the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law in an official statement on March 3, 3008. City mayors, led by Mayor Jerry P. Trenas, LCP Chairman, trooped to Malacanang to show their support to the President.

Philippine Cities shine in local governance
Five cities comprise the biggest batch of awardees in the recent 2007 Gawad Galing Pook. The cities of Marikina, Naga, Cebu, Las Pinas, and San Carlos emerged with other five winners from municipalities and provinces that were recognized for their innovations in local governance. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo conferred the awards on February 28, 2008.  

Philippine cities continue protest, seek moratorium from Congress
Philippine cities continue to rev up their information drive for their constituents on the perceived long term effects if the undue creation of unqualified cities continues.
