Philippine Local Government Responses to COVID-19

By LCP Secretariat
June 28, 2020 - Quezon City

When President Rodrigo Duterte declared a state of public health emergency in the country on 8 March 2020, many LGUs have promptly mobilized resources and implemented precautionary measures to safeguard their localities from the threat of COVID-19. As the virus escalated, so too did the response interventions of city governments.

Through the COVID-19 City Tracker (bit.ly/covid19citytracker), the League was able to keep track and create an informal audit of the specific actions each of our 146 cities have taken to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic.

From monitoring online news articles, official websites, and Facebook pages of city governments, we took note of the six (6) thematic areas that guided most of these LGU actions:

1. Baseline mitigation strategies
2. Local policy issuance and compliance
3. Social amelioration program facilitation
4. Partnerships with various sectors
5. Local health and containment strategies
6. Management of returning OFWs and LSIs
